Bringing retro cool back to the prints trend is the ever classic and understatedly elegant polka dots. If a fashionista must have absolutely just the one print item in their wardrobe, it has got to be a polka dot shirt. And frankly, that’s the only thing you’ll need! Well, unless you’re a polka dot-maniac who must absolutely have dotted everything – polka dot dresses, polka dot socks, polka dot lingerie, polka dot bikinis, polka dot pants, polka dot skirts… big dots, small dots!
I wore this outfit to meet THE Fashion Blogger Rumi Neely of Fashiontoast (for those of you who haven’t heard of her yet, she is one of the pioneers who made fashion blogging BIG) during the #RumilovesIT private event. I remember having read one of her interviews where she spoke about how she’s a fan of oversized/loose-cut shirts, and that is exactly where I got my idea from for this special look of the ‘day’ (night).
This polka dot shirt is from Novelty Lane — an online store based in Hong Kong that promotes contemporary fashion labels around Asia (and which is perfectly in line with what I hope my blog will be able to do too!). The soft as silk texture and femininity is contrasted with a crisp V-neck collar, the sleeves are rolled up and front panels tucked to build volume, bringing a subtly structure to the printed material and creating a truly simple yet fantastic statement that every girl should have in their closets (if you still have space!)
As is reported in Harpers Bazzar and referenced by celebrities in UK Glamour Magazine (Oh and FYI, that Chanel pearl dress on Alexa Chung is still my all-time favourite), the polka dot is – as I still believe – something that should be assembled with other prints such as the balanced tropical printed skirt from Kenax Leung that I’m wearing. The combination of two very different prints can seem like a risky and random look, but I guarantee you, it’s gonna look trés chic.
